How I found one and so should you

This has, however, changed. It started with a piece I published in Shortform. The piece is titled Why I Was Wrong about Writing Short Form. In general, nobody likes to be wrong, especially when you’ve dug yourself in and planted a flag at the summit of the i-am-right hill, but I don’t mind when it’s the welcome-surprise kind [of wrong] — which this was.

When you deal with hostility more often than not ( I don’t deal with it that often), you become wired to the expectation of combativeness from others. And a sense of community is far from your mind.

I recently decided on a 4:1 writing ratio, where I write a minimum of one optimistic, or neutral, piece to every four potentially (I don’t set out to be divisive) contentious pieces. This is for my own wellbeing and soundness of mind as much as anything else.

Writing more positive pieces has opened up a new area of Medium to me — one of community. I still step into the fray from time to time, when the disbelief and awe at the latest buffoonery and woolly…
