What is the whole buzz around Atomic Design and Design Thinking?

Atomic design and design thinking, the new normal in the UI/UX industry is soaring high. Designers and developers across the globe are actively embracing the terminology to change their traditional method of building a website application.

Even though there’s a lot of buzz around the term, not many are aware of its ideal definition and corresponding usage. Keeping this as the frame of our discussion, we create this piece to educate you on what design thinking is and how can you leverage it when it comes to building a robust web application.

Defining Design Thinking: What does it mean?

To begin our journey, we start by introducing design thinking. The standard definition of the term states that design thinking is a mechanism that undertakes logic, intuition, imagination, and reasoning to build an application. The core of the methodology remains at designing applications that resonate with the wants & expectations of the customers.

Meaning that it prioritises customer views while keeping the stakeholders within the loop. Nearly at every stage, the stakeholders are involved and their consensus is gathered to build the final product. Design thinking is anything but cannot be boring and in fact, it is considered as one of the engaging activities when building an application.

With design thinking in your web building process, you would no longer have to worry whether the prototype is ideal or will your customers love the product.

Atomic Design: Interlinking Elements and Modules?

Now that you are aware of what design thinking is and how does it affect the web industry, let’s uncover ways in which the methodology works.

Similar to design thinking, there exists a term as Atomic Design. The concept was first published by Brad Frost back in 2016 when the term and technology were in its nascent stage. In simple terms, Atomic Design is part of design thinking and modulates how a web application can be broken down into singular components. The core here lies in creating elements that can work in a standalone environment and are reusable.

In chemistry, atoms are the smallest unit and when we talk about the website, an atom could be anything from a form to a button. Following a similar notion, molecules indicate the fusion of two or more atoms, tailored to meet a particular feature. Molecules in the web domain are the combination of UI elements that can be reused in a different environment for a different application.

Let’s understand this through an example. As suggested, atoms within a website include a button, a form field, or popup.

Now when you need to build a form that has a button or two within it, you would need to fuse two atoms. So a website form field with input tabs and a CTA accounts for a molecule. Extending this forward, two or more molecules add to build an organism. Or to put it this way, when molecules fuse together to act as a single entity, they are named as organisms.

A layer above is the templates that have both molecules and organisms. All of these when orchestrated with the help of images and content, constitute a web page. As so it appears, atomic designing is more of a mind game and this is where the concept of design thinking comes. It is important for the designer to take into consideration a variety of factors when building a page.

Advantages of Design Thinking

Wondering why invest your time and efforts in atomic design thinking?

Here are a few benefits for you to consider.

Conclusion

Also, it is believed that only the UI/UX designers could adopt the strategies but that’s partially true. Design thinking is a strategy that can be adopted by any industry but if we narrow down to the web industry, you must have the skills and expertise to be one.
