Follow Your Own Path

There’s only one of you.

When we do our HSC or GCE or SAT or International Baccalaureate or whatever we call the final assessment for high school in our country, it seems like such a huge mountain because, for most of us, it’s the biggest real world thing we’ve ever done. The adults in our lives know how it ends — they know that life goes on after that final assessment — but, to us, it doesn’t feel like it. At that point, we can’t see beyond that final year/ final assessment because that reality of not being in high school and working and/ or doing higher education is unimaginable. It’s unlike anything we’ve ever known.

We have to go through that experience ourselves though. No one can carry us through it.

Whenever you do something distinctive, there’s always fear involved. Even if it’s only a small thing, you feel like you shouldn’t be doing it this way — you should be doing it the ‘usual’ way. But for some of us, the ‘usual’ way doesn’t come naturally.

I always compare myself with others. I look at how other people do things and, because I don’t do those things in the same way, I think that I don’t do them well. I still haven’t learnt that I have to do things in my own way — that that’s actually the only thing I can ever do, and that it’s actually better.
