On Choice

What separates us…

We have insatiable desires and instincts which make us among animals. Our ability to thoughtlessly act makes us one of them.

However why am I able to write this today in a “Us vs. Them” format, why are we not the same? Shouldn’t this whole thing just be one big similarity?

We have but one distinction among the animals and that is the same distinction which allowed me to write this today or you to read this now.

Choice!

I chose to write, you chose to read. As animals this ability does not exist, humans will forego a little bit of food today in order to find more tomorrow. Animals don’t have such luxury.

Ultimately when it matters we revert back to our instincts. We must eat eventually and our brains will allow instinct to overpower choice in the end.

This is the beauty of being, we may bathe in our problems and delight in them. For we and only we have the power to choose how to respond to them.
