How to conduct effective lessons learned sessions

Most people believe that lessons learned sessions are the key to inspiring growth mindset among team members but very few leaders are able to execute. Here are a few tips to effective lessons learned sessions:

1. Conduct 30 minute weekly sessions with 6 to 8 attendees.

2. Agenda:

a. 2-minute introduction and reminder. Focus on the lessons, protect the trust among team members.

b. 10-minute lesson learned planned presentation by the host. Covering the following:

c. What did we set out to achieve?

d. What did we do?

e. What were the results?

f. What should we do differently next time?

g. 10-minute Q&A

h. 8 minutes for any ad-hoc lessons learned

3. Encourage candor and fearless sharing of insights by not documenting the lessons learned on blogs. Opening one’s actions for discussion is difficult for team members who pride themselves on their skill, dedication, and efforts.

Just the act of participating in such sessions cements lessons learned in the minds of team members.
