It’s not coincidental that employers report high-quality communications as the most important thing they did during our transition to remote working. Nor do I find it coincidental that employees trust employers most for information about the coronavirus. Look at Edelman’s 2021 Trust Barometer — business being the most trusted institution ahead of government, media and NGOs.

In their 21st annual Trust Barometer, Edelman declares information bankruptcy — an erosion of trust in institutions around the world as millions of lives have been lost during this COVID-19 pandemic. It’s noted that after many years, governments briefly regained top marks for trust among institutions as citizens looked to them for leadership against the pandemic and shepherding economies. That trust was squandered. So, now, employees now rely on businesses, on their leadership, for reliable information and to help solve societal problems — the latter isn’t new; we’ve been discussing since we launched Culturati.

There’s a global outcry over systemic racism and political instability. In Washington we’re witnessing the failure of leaders to uphold our constitution, instead caving to the conspiracy delusions of violent mobs. Some state houses are ramping up voter suppression, unhappy with the results of national elections. It’s daunting to realize systemic racism and political instability are in full play in the USA.

According to the Trust Barometer:

I’ve been in lots of conversations about how will we have changed after this pandemic. How will we treat each other differently? What changes are permanent? Has COVID been a great equalizer?
