Perception

A. In The Great Gatsby, the character known as Jay Gatsby was originally known as James Gatz. Gatz found that his personality needed to change in order to make people like him more. Because of his decision, he became an entirely new person, with the name Jay Gatsby. The poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T.S. Eliot has the same kind of premise: the speaker wants to change his personality and look so people around him will like him more.

B. Based on what I’ve seen, a person’s perception of themselves is almost always bad on them. For example, one person might think that they are overweight. Another person might say that they’re so ugly that it would be a miracle that they could find love in their life. People’s self-perception is always bad. On the other hand, people’s perception of other people are almost always comparisons between themselves and that person. Some people may think that other people are better than them, some people think that other people are worse than them. It all depends on the type of person they are.

C. To me, the line “prepare a face to meet the faces you meet” means that I need to make sure and be my best self when being around people. My best self is to always be polite, have a smile on your face when necessary, and to try and make new friends.

D. The song that I chose that connects to my understanding of perception is Speed of Light by Pink Cream 69. Below are the lyrics that connect to my idea:

You’re on the info highway
Change your personality
Turn yourself into someone
That you just pretend to be
No trace of where you come from
Been heard but never seen

These lyrics show that the singer is talking to someone about their personality and that they need to change it. They go on to say that their original self will “disappear”, suggesting that the person who wanted to change might not want to be the person they are now.
