How Does Perfect Love Cast Out Fear

I grew up on a traditional family dairy farm. This was long before cell phones, so I was Mom and Dad’s messenger when they needed to communicate while Dad milked the cows at night. Nightly walks…

The Pandemic at the Casino had nothing to do with Covid

Joel Greenberg loved going to the casino. He had a high-pressure job as a Paramedic and he found that playing cards and the occasional slot machine were a great way to escape the daily life and death situations he dealt with.

Since the Covid outbreak, Joel stayed far away from the Casinos. If there was one place that had the opportunity to be home to super spreaders, it was the place where people threw caution to the wind and money into addictive slot machines.

After watching the number of infected people drop dramatically in Ontario, Joel decided to visit a new Casino that had opened in Pickering, Ontario. It was massive and filled with thousands of flashing, interesting, and alluring machines.

Joel’s first desire was to play cards. He had taken two hundred dollars to the casino with him and thought if he could make a hundred bucks he would turn around and leave. He sat down at the blackjack table and handed over a hundred-dollar bill to the dealer. She looked at him quizzically and gave him four green chips. ‘’Uh, Thanks, but I prefer smaller denominations, I don’t want to bet twenty-five dollars a hand.’’ The dealer snorted a laugh. ‘’We have a fifty-dollar minimum per hand.’’ Joel did a double-take. ‘’What, fifty dollars a hand, I didn’t take out a mortgage to come play here. Do you have tables I can play at with smaller stakes?’’ The dealer was looking off into space and barely paying attention. ‘’Fifty dollar minimum, we don’t have lower limits, either you play fifty dollars a hand or you don’t play. There was a pandemic, the casino needs to make up for lost time.’’ Joel scooped up his chips. ‘’I came here for entertainment, not business. I guess those lines have blurred.’’He stood up and marched over to the cashier and joined a long line of people. When he made it to the cage, he handed in his four green chips. The woman who took them counted them twice. ‘’Do you want a hundred-dollar bill or twenties?’’ Joel answered twenties and she handed back five bills. ‘’Good Luck.’’ Joel could still hear the dealer’s words in his mind ‘’The casino has to make up for lost time’’ and he believed it. He was supposed to be having fun, but after twenty minutes of being in this new den of iniquity, he wasn’t.
