The Baker Who Murdered 17 Young Women After Hunting Them

How did Robert Christian Hansen go from being the town’s favourite baker to a horrendous rapist and serial killer?

In the deadly decade from 1972–1983, around 17 to 21 young women were kidnapped, raped, and murdered by the infamous Butcher Baker. Visiting local clubs, the young man would offer women money in exchange for sexual favours. Once the women got in his car, he would drive them to his cabin, rape them and then fly them off to a secluded area in his plane. Once he arrived at the remote location, he would set the victim free, only to hunt them down like an animal.

Born on 15th February 1939, in Iowa, Robert Christian Hansen was a shy boy, with a mild stutter and intensive acne problem, that left him feeling insecure and unwanted. Then again, being meek or bullied isn’t uncharacteristic in an American teen’s life. Neither is neglect from father. Then what exactly went wrong during Hansen’s childhood that a harmless boy became one of the country’s most haunting, ruthless, and gory serial killers?

Hansen mostly spent his free time hunting or practicing archery, and in 1957 he was enlisted in the US army. However, a year later, he was discharged from his post. Hansen eventually moved to Iowa, where he ended up marrying his first wife in 1960.

So far, so good. Mundane events from the life of everyday American young man. But that’s not all!

As history would remember him, accounts narrate Hansen grew up with a lot of pent-up rages and an unending taste of revenge for the lack of attention he received from girls during high school. In June 1960, Hansen was arrested for setting fire to a school bus garage. Many believe this to be the start of Hansen’s revenge.
