How is Vocal Media Choosing the Top Stories?

A closer look at which stories are making the mark.

Do you write on Vocal Media or thinking of joining the platform? Would you like a bit of insider’s scoop about Vocal from someone who has been on there for a little while? Read on if you are curious.

I am not going to go into a comparison of Medium with Vocal as platforms. The biggest draw card of Vocal is the Writing Challenges it has with thousands of dollars up for grabs as prize money. There are some good articles on Medium comparing the two writing platforms already. I will link one for you at the end.

What I am going to focus on is telling you about some unique features of Vocal Media and then deep dive into one of them.

You get a $5 Bonus if your story gets chosen to be a Top Story

You get a $5 for publishing your first 5 stories. There is a belief that you get $10 for publishing $10 and $50 for publishing 50 stories.

Your story can be a Staff Picks which is similar to a Medium Curation. This can earn a writer $10.

Vocal even rewards its readers for reading other’s stories. You get a $5 bonus for reading and liking (using a cute ❤️) 15 stories on the platform!

As a writer, personally, I covet the Top Story status the most. Why you ask? Well, it’s not really for the $5 bonus, though that is really nice.

What I like the most is the reader exposure a top story gets. One click on the Top Story tab brings up this smorgasbord of articles and stories in different genres from a variety of writers. It is great publicity for your story and makes it easily discoverable. Also, it is a badge of approval, like a little virtual pat on the back that says, “ Hey, your writing stood out.”

My Top Story from December is still getting more views than my other ones.
