I Saw The End Of The Rainbow

I could see. But I couldn’t touch.

I found the rainbow’s end.

I wasn’t even looking.

In the morning I awoke, the lake before me now calm. It thrashed against a heavy wind the night before, beating against the rock it had churned down into sand over the centuries. Now, exhausted, it took a breath, warming what it could under a cloud-veiled sun.

A filter of gray hung over the landscape, muting autumn foliage peeking up from across the lake. Wanting to display colors a year in the making, the trees waited for the sun. They’d had enough of the clouds.

Yet as the morning cover shifted, the sun spotlit a small section of land across the way. Technicolor against tints of gray. But the sun revealed more than the colors of fall. Against the backdrop of yellows and reds, the translucent blue and the violet of a rainbow emerged. As if directing the view of the world onto this small, tree-lined beach on the other side of the lake.

The gold of sand and leaf reflected brilliantly under the sun. Water close enough to catch directly light shimmered. All under the crescent slip of a rainbow’s descent to earth.

I stood, my own footing in the gray, and watched the end of the rainbow. I wondered if the sand, the trees, life under the sun-bleached microscope knew they were the end of the rainbow. Could they see it? Or were they not aware they’d found it? That they’d been selected to be it? Perhaps, through their eyes, the rainbow did not make itself known and instead saw the arching colors come down at a different point.

Does one ever know they are the rainbow’s end?

I contemplate as the clouds shift and the colors of forest and sky fade.
