How To Write About Love as A Literary Device

There is more than just one type of love in a story

Writing about love in a story can be tricky. Not all love interest is straightforward. Do you know how to describe love?

Let’s first define a love interest: This character is probably your protagonist and potential lover. Of course, not all love interests are the same, just like in real life. You need to create a multi-dimensional character. There is more than one type in real life and the same for your story or book.

Empty love — means you have Commitment, but the absence of Intimacy and Passion. Romantic love — a combination of Intimacy and Passion without Commitment. Companionate love — a combination of Intimacy and Commitment without Passion. Fatuous love — a combination of Passion and Commitment without Intimacy

These are the characteristics you need in your story

· Appearance

· Backstory

· Mannerisms

· Goals

· Likes and Dislikes

· Flaws

When you are writing about love you need to show the vulnerabilities and strengths of your protagonist. This will allow you to have some complexities in your character. You can also create some great stumbling blocks that get in the way of your character achieving his or her goal. It’s a great subplot.

Think about the goal. What is the goal of her protagonist? Is it clear he or she is after love? We need to know that. How much of that is part of your book?
