The Change Blindness Conundrum

One of the most fascinating aspects of the human brain is its ability of selective attention span. The environment around us which we feel that is a complete reality is an illusion of the mind. Our senses and our brain dictate what we want to see or perceive depending on a variety of stimuli One of the major stimuli of all is that of vision. In spite of completely capturing the same image or sequence of images, our brain can completely blind ourselves from obvious changes around us. This is what is called “change blindness”.

In an experiment conducted by Simmons and Chabris, it became clear that change blindness was indeed a thing but in spite of my reading multiple articles and research papers, I could not find a proper understanding of how can it be even possible. You also go and give a try -

With this question in mind as I dig deep in the curious and complex topic of subjective visual awareness, I came across a study of Electrophysiological correlates of subjective visual awareness: an ERP study by Simone Grassini from Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He used ERP to investigate the timing of electrophysiological activity on the brain and correlate with visual awareness. The results along with Ronal Rensink’s paper on Change blindness: Implications for the Nature of Visual Attention make me still ponder on whether a three-way understanding of data science, psychology, and design be needed to have a deeper understanding of the brain. Can change blindness be just one side of the coin the other side been intuition?
