Why is BLS Certification Important in the Opioid Epidemic?

Opioids include illegal drugs such as heroin and synthetic opioids as well as prescription medications like oxycontin. Opioid abuse, misuse and overdose has been steadily rising since the late 1990s. These drugs are equal opportunity killers, targeting not only minorities who have historically been affected by drug abuse, but also a disproportionate number of whites. Opioids are found all over the United States, in rural, suburban and urban areas alike.

With the increased usage of Narcan, a drug that is supposed to end the opioid epidemic through its quick effectiveness in overdose situations, many may wonder why becoming BLS certified is still important? An overdose of an opiate causes the victim’s breathing to stop. Narcan is not always immediately effective. Therefore, someone who knows BLS can perform live-saving breathing and chest compressions on the victim until help arrives.

The short answer to this question is, everyone. The opioid epidemic affects people of all races and all levels of socioeconomic status. One of the biggest problems with opioids is that they may be legitimately prescribed and used to treat and manage pain. Consequently, everyone is at risk for developing an addiction or misusing these dangerous drugs.

Of course, protecting oneself is crucial when administering help to an opioid overdose victim. It is recommended that everyone carry either a keychain facial mask or shield or disposable facial shields in case of emergency. These facial barriers are vital to performing BLS on an opioid overdose victim to protect the BLS certified person. Rubber gloves may also be appropriate to use.

Additionally, bystanders and BLS certified individuals must not touch any opioids at the scene of the emergency, as these can be absorbed through mucous membranes and skin and can cause problems or even death if touched. Remove these drugs from the victim or scene with another object if available.

Make sure bystanders and others, including children, who are at the scene are safe. If injured, ensure that they receive treatment.

Remember that the opioid overdose victim might have a co-occurring mental health condition. Be mindful of this when administering BLS. The victim might exhibit unusual behavior due to a mental health disorder.
