Of mathematics and Mathematical Thinking

We all struggle with mathematics. Perhaps, it is the most hated subject during the school time. And somehow, it doesn’t make sense. I mean after all what is the use to find square root of a number or what is the purpose of learning the value of cos 60 (Trigonometry is mystery for many). I understand all your feeling and can empathize very well with them

But what is mathematics. It is just another language. Just like English or Hindi or Bengali, we communicate with each other without much effort; similarly, we want to communicate something with the help of numbers. Mathematics comes handy in that case.

Mathematics is just pure observation. And so is the mathematical thought. Remember, Pythagoras. He must have observed that every time he draws a right triangle, he gets that sum of square of two sides with a right angle was equal to square of third side (Hypotenuse). With this simple observation, he was blown away and wanted to create a logical proof of it. Hence, we get Pythagoras theorem.

But what is the use of it — Why do we study it? Imagine that you need to tie a rope from the top of building to the base, somewhere 20 m away from the building. Since it is a right angled triangle which is formed, we can find how big a rope we would require. So the theorem is used extensively in architectural endeavors. Similarly, it is used in finding the shortest distance between two random points without measuring it. (Someone walked 8 kms north and then 6 kms east. We can find out where he is not with this theorem). It was a revolution. It created the entire school of trigonometry which has become very instrumental in construction, estimation, etc.

Mathematics is all around us. You know that petals of a daisy flower, shell of snail, etc all follow a number series called Fibonacci series (also know as Hemachandra numbers — The guys know the pattern way before Fibonacci). Even Indian music use this pattern. And so do the juggler juggling with balls.

Think about a circle. Why do we have 360 degrees in a circle. Do we know any number which is near 360 — yes, it is 365 (the number of days, earth takes to revolve around sun). We just took this number for our ease. If the earth had taken 700 days, our circle might have 700 degrees. But nothing would have changed about the properties of circle.

Another important property of circle is that whenever you divide the perimeter (circumference) of circle with its diameter, you will always get a constant i.e. pi. It was a revolutionary observation when it was made first time. Pi is one of the know constant which exist in nature. The other constant we know if G — Gravitational constant.

Mathematics is not about solving a question. It is about inculcating the love for this new language which exists in nature. It is about know how to use the tools to make things easier. Just as a hammer makes it easy to drill a nail, calculus makes it easy to calibrate engine of a car.

Mathematics is fun if you learn the knack of it. It is like juggling with numbers and concepts — just look beyond JEE or NTSE prep and the whole world of wonders is there to welcome you. Who know, there is a next Ramanujan in you to discover new tools in the subject. Hope, we have love for the subject and learn it with open mind.
